I didn't rent a scooter until week 3 and wish I had earlier. I want to say I spent under $100 for a week scooter rental. This gave me access to so many cooler coffee shops outside of the Old Town area + I did the Samoeng loop. That loop ended up being one of the coolest things I did in the Chiang Mai area. Drive slow. People drive like crazy people! FYI, there's no subway in Chiang Mai & never will be. The city is not built for a subway.

If you're coming from Bangkok (like I did), it's like night and day. Bangkok was a metropolis. Craziness, super busy, felt like it never slept. Chiang Mai on the other hand still had plenty to do but felt like you could navigate it around. It felt much homier to me as someone who lives in the US but not in a major city.
