Pat's Penang Guide

Penang
I spent a couple weeks in March 2024 in Penang. I probably won't be back, but there were some things about Penang I loved. The food here is maybe some of my favorite in the world.

Definitely a Muslim presence

Of all the cities I visited in my trip around SEA (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore), this was the one I culturally fit in the least. I have nothing against being Muslim or any other religion, but with Penang/Malaysia being predominantly Muslim, I just felt like I didn't fit in like some of the other places I had recently traveled to (ie. Chiang Mai, Da Nang).

Rent a scooter from Happy Ken Motorbike Rental

Definitely an odd guy, but he's the best. Super friendly and offers a great rate. I want to say I paid 35rm a day (~$7USD). I extended my scooter rental maybe 3 times as I was unsure if I was going to leave Penang or extend my trip. Each time, it was not an issue for him.

It's hot and sticky

Wow is it hot here! I was here in March 2024 and it's so hot. It's very humid hot so 90 F feels so heavy. Make sure you hydrate and don't spend too much time outside in the sun without taking a break.
